Breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed to address the aesthetic and functional concerns associated with overly large breasts.

Before and After Photos

Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, removes fat and glandular tissue from the breast while tightening skin to produce smaller breasts that are more comfortable and in healthier proportion to the rest of the body.

It is a high satisfaction procedure offering relief from back, neck, and shoulder strain caused by enlarged breasts, increased mobility/exercise tolerance, a reduction in skin rashes from excess moisture and an overall improvement in fit of a patient’s desired clothing.

Who is a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Good candidates for breast reduction surgery are individuals with disproportionately large breasts that cause physical discomfort, pain, or self-consciousness. Candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure.

Will there be visible scarring after breast reduction surgery?

Scarring is an inevitable part of breast reduction surgery. However, the scars are typically well-concealed around the areola and may extend vertically or in an anchor shape, depending on the technique used. Over time, scars tend to fade and become less noticeable.

Will breast reduction surgery affect breastfeeding?

Breast reduction surgery can potentially affect the ability to breastfeed, as the procedure involves removing glandular tissue. However, some women are still able to breastfeed after surgery. It’s important to discuss your plans for breastfeeding with your surgeon during the consultation.

How long does breast reduction surgery take?

The average breast reduction surgery can take two to four hours to complete. Your surgeon may be able to give you an estimate of how long your particular procedure will take.

What do I wear after breast reduction surgery?

Patients are commonly given a surgical bra to wear for two weeks after surgery, 24 hours a day. At your follow-up visit, your care team will let you know if you should continue to wear the surgical bra or if you can wear a similar support garment of your choice. They will also let you know when it is appropriate to wear a traditional bra. It is commonly advised to avoid underwire bras for three months after breast reduction surgery.

Do men get breast reduction surgery?

How old do you have to be to get a breast reduction?

Do you recommend having a breast reduction before kids or a breast reduction after kids?

Breasts often undergo changes in size and shape during and after pregnancy, so it’s helpful to talk to your surgeon about the possibility of becoming pregnant after breast reduction surgery. If you plan to become pregnant in the future, breast reduction surgery may limit your ability to breastfeed, particularly if a large amount of breast tissue is removed or if the milk ducts are affected by the surgery. These are good questions to discuss during your breast reduction consultation.

When can I wear a normal bra after breast reduction?

Wait for the swelling to completely subside. This can take up to three months. At that time, you can shop for new bras that fit your new breast size and shape.

Will I be getting a lift as part of a breast reduction?

Yes, the breast tissue and the skin are removed and the nipple and the areola are raised to a higher location. The lift is a part of the breast reduction procedure.
